thanks. ended up getting it. finally thought to pop the hood on my 06 9-3 aero to see how the thing worked. the center part on the hood does nothing until the latch is popped. needed to release the two pins to the left and right of center - about even with the smaller holes in the grill (about 6" either side of center). this is done by pulling the lever in the car which is attached to a cable that pulls a small spring loaded rod out of the grove (moves them both towards the driver's side) on the pins that hold the hood down. by using a long flat head screwdriver, i was able to move the rods enough to release. then the srings on the pins holding the hood down popped it up. i lubed things up a bit and it is now working better.
seems like the first step towards any solution is to understand how things physically work...
