Maintenance schedules are based on history with the vehicle model and vehicles with similar mechanical systems. The actual conditions that any particular vehicle sees in use can vary widely. That is why some driver's get 20,000-miles from a set of brake pads and others get 40,000-miles from a set of brake pads on the same model year vehicle.
The best I can say is that the maintenance schedule is good for the "average" vehicle. Depending on your particular driving environment (stop&go or freeway, short trips or long dives, hot and dusty or cold and wet, discount gas stations or well maintained name brand stations, etc.), you can adapt the maintenance schedule to your needs.
Also bear in mind that some individuals want to wring every last mile from their car parts. So they are willing to drive until the serpentine belt breaks, then get towed to someplace to fix it. Others want to have piece of mind that their vehicle is not going to ever break down and want parts changed well before any chance of breakage.
Only you can decide what fits your style and needs. I tend to be conservative and would rather change parts at 80% of their life span rather than take a chance of something breaking down.
