Usually the numbers start at the front of engine where the belt is on most car brands (but not all).
This meant a lot of trouble for a general mechanic when he looks at an old 900 pre 94 that have the front of the engine at the back of the engine compartment but the belts and cyl 1 still apply.
So #3 should be second to last on the driver side of of engine compartment but that kind of messes things up if you are in a LHD country ;o).
So sitting in either driver seat facing forward, front of engine is to your right and that's where #1 cylinder is.
