Currently driving a 2008 TurboX. My second 9-3 the other one being a 2004 Aero. Both had the infamous fuel gauge sender unit problem with fuel gauge operating from 2/3 of tank or so.
Both were cured by filling up with gas while ignition is on, and then keeping the engine running until the gauge realizes it's full. But not from the first time. It kept going crazy for another 3 or 4 fill-ups. Eventually begins working normally again (after exercising ignition-on fill-ups for 3-4 times in a row).
Can't really explain the physics behind. Maybe it helps when the fuel sensor is under power while the float is moving upon fueling... But it's the second time this resolved the issue for me on two different cars.
Not guaranteed, but wouldn't hurt to try before replacing the fuel sensor, right?
Cheers
Serge
