Thanks Drew .. got there in the end.

In case it helps anyone else here are some observations:

I think this job really needs both top and bottom access.
Was not able to thread the belt from just the top, with the wheel off and plastic fender liner off it was pretty easy.

The tensioner without the belt on is too close to the drive pulley to easily get the belt in from the top.

Getting the engine mount off is easy but you will need a female E14 torx.
Fishing the tensioner out is not so bad but it's quite hard to get the new one in place. You have to put the bolt through the tensioner before you slide it back in. This may be easier from the bottom but I was working from the top. Be careful it's properly seated on the locator pin.

As Drew observes you can get the belt off over the alternator pulley but to put the new one on you really need to thread all three pulleys and then slide it onto the tensioner idler with it retracted.

With the engine mount off you can get an regular 3/8 non ratchet socket drive in there so no need for a special tool.

This job not so terrible if you take the time to get both top and bottom access! Can't imagine trying to do it from the bottom. It's very tight in there.
