Inner Driver Self Destructed Posted by Chadwick [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Had an '06 9-3SS 2.0T Cvt 5spd in the shop today for strut mounts, bearings, and end links. A job I've done at least 15 times.
Finished up in about 1.5 hours. Everything came apart and went back together fine, nothing odd to report at all.
Drop the car back down on the ground and go to back it out... put in reverse and let out the clutch, something feels like it binds and makes a pop I feel through the seat and steering wheel. Press the clutch back in and get out to investigate.
Drivers inner tripod destructed inside of the companion flange. The companion flange could not engage the tripod to spin the axle, so the cup was just spinning free, which actually didn't tear the boot. The boot twisted two or three rotations completely without tearing and then the clamp began to slip and allow the axle to turn without the boot turning with it.
I'm still not really sure where I went wrong on this one. I did not lean the hub on the drivers side far out enough to pull the tripod out of the companion flange. Actually, I didn't 'lean' it at all, I just dropped it down enough to be off of the strut as I always do.
Hoping the differential is ok. Axle assembly coming from the scrap yard tomorrow and will post the results.
Anyone ever have anything like this?
