'03 9-3: radio or dash lights -- pick one! (help!)

I've got a 2003 9-3 Linear without any backlights on the dash.
The dimmer rocker does nothing, but if I hit the night panel button, I do get some backlighting around the radio and buttons -- just nothing behind the speedometer. My mechanic checked the wiring and the fuses and everything looked OK. His suspicion was that the rheostat switch was bad. I had it in the dealership and they wanted to just put a brand new instrument panel in -- wow!
In my quest to diagnose this, I heard someone indicate that the dash lights and the radio/SID share a ground. I pulled fuse 14 (Radio/SID/controls) and turned on the car... and let there be light! The lights come up if fuse 14 is pulled.
So now, I can listen to the radio in the day, and drive safely at night... but this is a sucky option so I want to fix it.
My questions:
1. Am I likely on the right track -- short somewhere between the radio/SID and the dash lights? Does anyone have wiring schematics for this car?
2. Does the fact that this works without fuse 14 point to a bad dimmer switch? That would be on the controls fuse, so pulling it out of the loop would lean towards this, right? Should I test this by wiring the rheostat out of the circuit with fuse 14 in?
3. If the rheostat is bad, where can I get a new one? I've looked on eEuro and can't find the right part.
Thanks everyone!
