Coolant leak query

Greetings Everyone:
I understand there are many posts about this topic on the board, but I have looked at them all and feel as though I have went full circle. My 03 9-3 has been leaking coolant for a few years now. The car doesn't seem to lose coolant when in the engine is on, rather the coolant loss occurs when it is turned off and cooling down, hence the small pool of coolant on the garage floor. I think the coolant on the floor rules out a leak in the block so that is a decimate plus. As sweedcar mentioned, the heat aiding seals to pressurize seem to make one think it is the water pump and I am convinced it has to be a seal.
So my question is, if the water pump is hypothetically leaking fluid, will that do any harm to the engine, ie, is there any way for the leaky coolant to contaminate the oil or does it remain seperate?
Second, I've noticed the rate of loss has increased this past week from a gallon per year perhaps a gallon a month. I have no desire to buy dex cool every month or to trash the enviornment so are there any easy fixes to try? Is it worth a shot to get a new expansion tank cap or are there any additives I can use to try and seal this issue? I recall the number 3634621 for some capsules that may do the trick. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks alot for any input.
BenR
