Ok, so you know a little or lot about car maintenance then so I can explain some things that have changed.
A couple of big differences have taken place.
One is that lubricants has gotten better so 3K/3month is really not needed anymore but 5K/6month is more inline with severe driving style and regular oils.
The Sport Sedan use 2 quarts more motor oil than most older Saab AND should have a high quality fully synthetic oil inside, not "just" a synthetic oil.
That helps them go 10K/12month between oil changes except if it is very severe driving style like 2-3 miles to church every Sunday which is one of the most severe driving styles there are.
The next big thing is the hype about no maintenance required for X amount of time or all service paid for up til this or that mileage. BMW kind of started that with 100K miles before the first tune up. That doesn't mean you drive 100K miles and then take it in for the service needed. It means they won't do it for free before that or as you have seen in the warranty and service book with the Saab, it isn't a whole lot that is included in that "free service" package and then magically, when the car is outside that interval, a hole lot of things are suddenly needed like brake fluid flushes, transmission flushes and so forth.
The third big thing is the demand from emission agencies that says, if you are going to sell your car in our country, it better not produce any waste products.
So by claiming that fluids are "filled for life" they satisfy that demand. The problem here is that no one really knows what the term "life of car" means and how many miles and years that is.
So if the transmission die from lack of fluid changes at 70 or 80K miles, the fluid lasted exactly to the point of life of transmission.
So by starting early and get the old fluids (brake and transmission every 30K or 4 years and coolant every 60K in my case) out for not really that big amount of money stretched out over the life of the car, you have done the best you can and IF? the transmission fail on you, you know that at least you did the best you could unless you took it to "honest Harry" down the street and he loosened the wrong bolt in transmission when pouring the fluid in or that they used the wrong type of fluid.
And yes, an oil change at my shop still gets the full, check this and check that and top off here included in the oil change.
Don't be sure about service records being saved if they go out of business. Better go back and have them update your book while they are still in business and maybe get them to print out the invoices again if you didn't save them.
I had a customer recently that had complained about transmission issues at one dealer before the warranty expired but they didn't specifically write down the complaints and what they did to address them so when the transmission started to get worse after the warranty expired and that dealership was now closed, he didn't have much legal leg to stand on at the other dealer.
