Thanks everyone for all the great replies. I certainly am not as educated as you in terms of this subject matter, but I do know generally whining sounds are bad. I took the car back to the dealer and they tried to make it sound like this is common. Clearly this is not good enough for me so they did say they could take the cover off and reset the chain, as Anders mentioned. They said they would see what all they could warranty and get back with me. I have the feeling they are going to want compensation, but I don't feel as though I should pay for their mistake or for a part not working properly. I like the mechanic and I don't think he would try and gip me so any thoughts on what I should be out? I think I can get the labor free and he said I may want to buy a new tensioner shoe. That sounds reasonable since the carhas 175k. Anything else I need to say or be aware of? The dealer should get back with me today or tomorrow.
Thanks again for all your thoughts.
