Yeah, that's how we used to do it,,, in the stone ages ;o).
Today's cars use on demand fuel pump system with no fuel pressure regulator or return line back to tank.
It is a fuel pressure sensor at fuel rail and a fuel pump module that regulates power/ground scheme to pump in pulses so that the pump revs up or down all depending on the demand.
Fuel pumps don't die as often as before, they slow down due to aging, setting off codes with not as many noticeable problems at first except a Check Engine light.
This system "might" be good but we sure see a lot of problems with it in the Volvo's and lots and lots of head scratching and guesses if we found the real problem being the sensor or maybe the fuel pump or maybe the module.
The biggest brains at Volvo also hit it good by mounting the control module in front of the right/rear wheel under the car so it gets a lot of road spray and corrosion on it.
Strangely enough, they later on came out with a bulletin to move the module in under the rear seat instead and on later cars, it is mounted in the right spare wheel well inside trunk. Go figure.
