Lifter question

Greetings:
I just returned from a nice 3,000 plus mile trip with the ole 9-3. For having over 200k, I drove 1,500 miles straight back home. Stopped 3 times for gas. She, thankfully, never ran hot and didn't use any oil or coolant. The one issue I noticed, however, was while I was letting her idle down, after ten seconds, I heard the ole 'tick tick tick' sound. It only happens at idle after at least driving 100 miles. It ticks for 10, 20 seconds and goes away a bit then comes back (i give a 2 to 3 minute idle down time). Also, past 1500 rpms, it goes away. It's the same sound as happens on some cold starts. Sooo...
I'm pretty confident it's just the roller hitting the lifter. I guess it could be a lubrication issue. My questions are, can you replace a lifter without the whole cam? Whats the cost? Lastly, ever heard of one failing and if so, what happens? Is it catastrophic like chain failure or does it just cause misfire where a limp to the dealer is possible? The noise comes from the very top of the engine so if it isn't a lifter and perhaps something minor, tell me. The motor is actually still very smooth and quiet considering her experience. Thanks.
