I don't quite understand. That sounds like normal behavior to me that the temp gauge shows cold at the beginning and then comes up to normal when the engine is heating up.
Or do you mean that when the engine is piping hot, the temp gauge shows cold for 1 mile before coming up?
Maybe the thermostat has gotten lazy and opens too early making the engine run too cold.
You would need to monitor the true engine coolant temperature with a scan tool to get the full picture.
