Car Died and then Resurrected

So my wife was driving home last night with our three year old son. She was really low on gas (D.T.E. 8 miles)and was just about to pull into the gas station when the car died. She tried to start it again, but it didn't even turn over, so I don't think it ran out of gas, especially since it just died and didn't sputter as if it was running out of gas.
Thankfully, a nice guy pushed her out of harms way and into the gas station. She got gas and it still didn't even turn over. She mentioned that the electrical system was doing weird things, interior lights flickering, etc. By the time I showed up with my neighbor all electrical systems seemed dead, but the volt meter read that the battery had 12V. When I tried to turn it over, the only thing that happened was the solenoid would click. All of this screams dead battery. So for kicks we jumped it and the car started right up. We got home without any problems. I took her to work and drove back home and it ran fine. The battery is about 3 years old so it MAY be going bad, but why is it running OK now and why did it die on her. If the battery were truly dead it shouldn't be starting and running fine.
Any ideas or thoughts on this are greatly appreciated. I want to make sure my wife and son are able to trust this car.
