I'd go with the 4cyl over the 6cyl Posted by Chadwick [Email] (#569) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Chadwick) on Sun, 11 Nov 2012 05:51:42 In Reply to: Advice please, Steinway, Sat, 10 Nov 2012 18:53:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I don't know if we're going to see 200,000mi V6 cars on the road. While the powertrain has been fairly reliable, the few catastrophic failures I've seen from them dropping valves shys me away. I had a Turbo X SportCombi for a few months and enjoyed it, but the fuel economy was quite bad and it wasn't really that fast compared to the 4cyl. The 6cyl is kind of lazy and doesn't like to rev quickly.
A 4cyl with a stage 1 or 2 tune will likely be as fast as the 6 and get you much better MPG as well as lower maintenance costs in the long run (just look at the difference between changing spark plugs on each engine, both from part cost and especially labor cost). The bottom end of the Ecotec 4 is completely caged and stupid strong compared to the SAAB engine blocks of old.
An 06+ 9-3 4cyl is probably one of the most reliable cars on the road in terms of always getting you home. More likely to have some kind of minor electrical problem than a major mechanical one. Out of the ~200 9-3SS's I work on, I think I've only ever had 15 or so come in on a tow truck, and that's almost always for a battery issue.
