Patient is an Aero with the 6-speed gearbox.
Problem was a sticky shifter that refused to return to its neutral, center position when the engine was hot.
After lubricating the cable ends, and the shift lever pivot under the console, same problem. So this with an internal problem, or a problem with the shif mecanism on top of the transmission.
Finally, after letting the car heat in the driveway this morning, the shifter became stiffer while the car did't turn a wheel. So that ruled out an internal problem, since the box was still cold, or at least, not hot.
I removed the battery tray once again, and took a deep look at the mecanism. Up-dowm movement was OK (this equals the left-right movement of the shifter) but the pivot for the bellcrank was suspicious stiff. After removing the circlip and the cable from the pivot, it became obvious. The stainless steel shaft is OK, but the press-in bushings are corroded. With heat, I guess this becomes very tight, and the internal spring is not strong enough to overcome the stiction.
You'll have to remove the whole mecanism from the car to dismantle all the bits. Temporary fix was to work it with grease, until I bring the car to the dealer for a more permanent repair, under warranty I presume.
If not covered, then I'll have to do it myself... or replace the whole thing. 55 561 689, same as a Regal/Insignia, 233$ according to this site.
