XWD Reliability, you say? Posted by Tulsaab [Email] (#31) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Tulsaab) on Mon, 13 May 2013 08:33:06 In Reply to: Re: I have one...what would you like to know? Here's what I know about the XWD systems in the 2011:
- I've only used the XWD in snowy conditions once - did great. However, it's awesome on a daily basis - totally unflappable and great for cloverleafs / curvy roads / roundabouts. If you can keep the fuel in the right part of the tank, you'll be very happy (see below)
- A lot of the issues which plagued the 2008 Turbo Xs w/ the same AWD systems appear to have been fixed (no water ingression in the rear diff, etc.) I've heard that the eLSD (equipped on the XWD Aero models) doesn't have much fluid in it, so it is the major wear item you've got to keep your eyes on - think this can be avoided through 30K fluid changes, however.
- In my 15K miles so far, the only issues I've had which are XWD related all come down to the fuel tank. Basically, it's a saddle tank with two sensors, one fuel pump, and a "venturi system" connecting the two. I've got some sort of problem with my venturi system, as it doesn't like to move fuel (which amounts to two gallons, I think) from one side of the saddle to the other. Therefore, If I take a right turn really quickly with less than 1/8 of a tank of gas left, I can starve the car of fuel. I've got an extended warranty, but instead of having my car taken apart, I think i'll just refuel at 12 gallons instead of 14.
- The rest of the car has been flawless from a quality standpoint - haven't had to touch a thing I didn't want to.
Let me know if you have any other questions - all in all, it's a great car to drive. I wish the 6sp manual was a bit more sporty, and the engineers had spent a bit more time on the fuel tank...but other than that, it's fantastic.
