I would first suspect the clutch on such an old car.
A Saab mechanic might be able to get a "feel" for the clutch health by just a short test drive.
Since we drive so many different cars we know where the clutch pedal should be at certain stages when the car start to move or stand still.
The owner of the car might not think about the subtle changes that happens over time when the clutch wear down and don't think it is anything wrong with it.
For instance, if I feel a very slight movement (tugging feeling) forward when trying to shift into 1s gear, I know the clutch is not releasing enough.
The same goes for if the reverse is tough to get in to.
Air in the hydraulic system can also be felt if the clutch pedal have a tad more slop/freeplay than what all the others of the same year/model has.
