Brake/clutch fluid : a few questions... Posted by magalar [Email] (#1325) [Profile/Gallery] (more from magalar) on Mon, 4 Nov 2013 20:04:16 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi everyone,
I did a 4 wheel brake job on the car (2008 V6 XWD) and took the opportunity to replace the brake fluid too. Since I did push back the pistons in all calipers, I remove all the old fluid in the reservoir with a syringe. This fluid was very dirty, as expected. I filled the reservoir with fresh Pentosin DOT 4 LV (low viscosity) fluid as per Saab specifications. The new fluid was clear as apple juice, but only for a minute. All the crud that accumulated in the back compartment mixed with the new fluid rapidly. I did pump this new/dirty fluid again, and filled the reservoir again. Still more crud, but a bit less. Since I only bought a 1 liter bottle, I stopped using new fluid to clean the reservoir innards and proceeded with the bleeding.
Question 1 : Should I remove the reservoir from the master cylinder to clean it more thoroughly ? Where does that crud (cloud-like stuff) comes from ?
After the bleeding of all 4 calipers, the liquid removed was the color of maple syrup but very clear. No trace of sediments or the cloudy stuff seen in the reservoir. I did it with a MightyVac at each bleeder, and removed about 150 ml per corner.
Question 2 : Why does that fluid darkens over time ? Heat, desintegration of the various rubber bits, or was it dark from the beginning ?
Now, the fluid in the lines, the ABS/ESP pump, the calipers and the master cylinder is fresh. But I forgot the nasty clutch master/slave cylinder...
Question 3 : How hard is it to reach the slave cylinder bleeder ? What's the best method to bleed that circuit ?
Thanks in advance for your answers, I always read them with great interest.
