Seals tend to weep, causing smaller leaks, and they can be expensive to fix if the engine/tranny need to come out.
A larger leak may point toward loose cooling line fittings or damaged cooling lines which could be far less costly to fix.
Any evidence of an obvious attempt to hide the leak by the previous owner may give you the option to negate the sale due to lack of merchantability or attempted fraud. Walking away with your original money in your pockets and the car in the PO's garage may be the final result in this case. Laws of this type vary state by state so hopefully the leak is an easy and inexpensive repair.
