I don't know all of the various and sundry differences.
From what I've read the early XWD cars like the TurboX had issues with the Haldex system, mainly leaks.
At almost 13k miles my 2010 9-3X has been the most trouble-free car I've ever owned. It's certainly not as fast as what the V6 would've been but I wouldn't call the 9-3X underpowered.
As for towing, you might want to check what the weight limits are for the 9-3X. I can tell you that it's not strong enough to carry more than two bicycles on a rack mounted to the rear of the car. That may give you an idea as to its towing capacity.
