I have an 03 and my year needed alot of work - mostly warranty work. Make sure all of that stuff was done if you opt for an 03 or 04.
In recent years my 03 also needed some expensive repairs (cabin fan/rain guard, rear main seal, secondary air injection) that are not issues in later model years.
The early models have a fiber optic network that was eliminated in later years in favor of standardized GM electronics.
The original dash was replaced with a more GM corporate dash in more recent years - I like the older one better - but that is a matter of taste.
Stick with the 4 cyl since maintenance of the 6 cyl is more expensive and tricky given how tightly squeezed it is in the compartment. The 4 has plenty of power, is very efficient, and, as far as I can tell, is fairly indestructible.
A very safe car that still looks beautiful and contemporary.
Good luck.
