Since you now have the assembly out of the car it should be very self explanatory what happened, I think.
If it is a metal to metal bond that has broke looe right under the spindle, maybe it can be welded back but I have not seen it breaking in that way before so I can't say.
I only see the different plastic bushings getting old and brittle with age and suddenly pop apart and there is no easy fix for that except installing a new wiper assembly.
