Back in the day I owned one of the first 9000s that had internal cam oil passages. Prior to that, there was a tube that carried pressurized oil to the tops of the cam bearing towers. The issue I had was valve clatter at startup. Once the engine had been running a minute, the problem resolved.
The diagnostic consisted of popping off the valve cover and prying on the valve lifter; soft meant bad, hard meant good. And two lifters, one on either side of one tower, showed bad. Unusual for there to be a bad lifter, even more unusual for two. New lifters were ordered, installed, but the problem persisted. A closer look showed that although the correct bolts were installed, the one cam bearing tower didn't have its oil passage drilled; it was an "old style" cap that had somehow been installed in a "new style" engine. And yet, there never was any problem, other than the initial clatter on start up.
Clearly it's better to have the oil passages open. Just as clearly, if you had assembled the engine and not caught the bolts being misplaced, I think you would have noticed all kinds of valve clatter long before any damage was done.
