I would try and investigate your option 1. There were several posts archived in the site about that so while you await a reply from hopefully someone who knows more than me a little research may help pass the time. When you changed the fluid did it look like coolant was in it (I remember people saying that could happen).
I think the 03's are great, mine is a daily driver with over 415k miles on it but is a manual. Usual if it's engine they are pretty good about telling you via the check engine light so I'd imagine any bumed sensors causing the motor to stumble would tell on themselves. I believe the transmission coolant issue was recalled as well so maybe a service record check would tell if that was ever addressed. If not then may be worth fixing anyhow.
