2005 Stumbling, flashing CEL, no power/ slipping A/T? Posted by John Kos [Email] (#2194) [Profile/Gallery] (more from John Kos) on Thu, 27 Jul 2023 23:25:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
New to me from the original owner, 2.0T, A/T, 81,000 miles. Absolute creampuff. Driven very gently, mostly around town.
Fuel level sender failed and she drove it out of fuel. Since then the CEL has come on and the codes and descriptions from the maintenance records are as follows-
P0463 fuel Tank Level Circuit high Input
P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System- Leak Detected (Large Leak)
P1455 EVAP System, Fuel Level Sensor Failure and Gross Leak Detected
Records indicate part # 69702 "Fuel Pump Module Assembly" was replaced and CEL cleared.
Based on this number does anyone know if that was the whole unit or just the fuel sender?
CEL came on again showing
P0455 EVAP system leak
From maintenance records- Part #CP412 "Vapor Canister Purge Control Solenoid" was replaced.
CEL came on again per seller. No codes indicated in the service record, but they replaced all plugs with FR6KPP33X+
Seller was told by technician that she needed all coil packs replaced.
CEL came on again and she was done with the (INSANELY HIGH from this shop) expenses and hassle so now it's my problem(s) :)
When test driving, the car started fine but stumbled badly and died once at cold idle. Idled much smoother when up to temp.
Around town car drove ok with an occasional stumble. When driving my new problem home on level streets in town it drove fine.
However, going up the steep (16-18%) hill to my house, when I dipped into the throttle, there was an immediate deep droning sound (like a slipping A/T) and dramatic loss of power- like it was in limp home mode. CEL came back on but not flashing at that point.
B A R E L Y made it up the hill at maybe 5 mph. Boost gauge basically at 12 o'clock- about 3/4 of the way through the white range.
As soon as the road leveled out and I was back at partial throttle the car drove almost completely normal.
I replaced the coil packs and checked the plugs. All looked good (can post pics if that would help), except cyl 1 plug was basically finger tight...
After reconnecting the battery it started easily then idled at 1050 or so rpm for 40-50 sec then settled down to about 850. Smooth idle, no CEL.
Test drive started great, but as I dipped into the throttle to merge into traffic the power completely disappeared just like it did going up the hill with the same deep droning / moaning sound and what felt like a slipping transmission. It felt like it was bogging down- bad.
As I drove it around more, I noticed some serious shift hesitation both up and down, and hunting for gears.
CEL came back on at this point.
Going into/ out of the throttle to get it up to speed it would catch, then bog, then catch, etc... at 50ish mph while trying to get up a moderate grade the CEL started to flash so I -gently- headed home.
I haven't had the current CEL code checked yet but does anyone have some input from my experience thus far?
I'll get the code(s) read tomorrow and follow up.
