Re: P0089 Part Deux Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: P0089 Part Deux, Gator Ray ![]() |
P0089 is a very common code on the Saab V6 and Volvo's from 2005 when they also started with variable speed fuel pumps.
On the Volvo's, 95% of the cases are the fuel pressure sensor and you plop another one in in the fuel rail and the fuel pump lives happily ever after for many more miles.
The Saab V6 is a little bit different and the fuel pressure sensor fixes about 50% of the cases and the fuel pump the remaining 50%.
This was all fine and dandy back in the days when the Saab genuine pump was available and the Walbro T1 and Airtex was also in fact Saab genuine pumps.
Now with the Saab parts problems, it is much more difficult and Hedin parts are also struggling finding a good solution and they do try hard to keep your cars on the road.
So over the last 5 or so years, there have been several pump solutions with mixed results and some problems stem from that the pulse valve had a different tuning but also that the pump motor itself was stronger delivering more fuel than the control moduel could handle and therefore setting off that P0089.
So the code could actually be set because the pump is TOO GOOD.
One way to see the status of your pump is to dial in the fuel pump duty cycle with the Tech 2.
On the old genuine new pump, you would see a duty cycle of 35-38% at idle and 65-70% at WOT.
A worn pump would be around 40-50% at idle and spring up to 94.5% at WOT which is max value.
These new more powerful pump solution would show around 15-20% duty cycle at idle and 50-60% at WOT and some cars would flag a code and some not. A little bit of a hit and miss and that's where we are now with Hedin trying to find a solution with the pulse valve and pump motor.
And now we are only talking about the genuine solution and not all the other off brand solutions that we have no control over at all what they find in China.
