Generally when a DI cassette fails it fails in the electronic switching portion of the unit and not the actual ignition coils themselves. But even so it always seemed like a waste when one coil would fail and you had to throw out the baby with the bathwater because all for coils were sealed whith epoxy as a unit and were not replaceable individually. I was always an avocate of separate coils screwed to a common plate and of moving the critical electronics away from all that heat(after all how much delay do you have in 3 feet/1 meter of wire when electricity travels at the speed of light?
Saab almost did exactly what I would do. They incorporated the ignition electronics into the engine control computer so that is gone(although they did mount that to the engine which is a bit scary) and they went to 4 individual coils that were attached to the motor with 1 screw apeice. The coils look very similar to the BMW units so maybe they will be as reliable as well.
