Once you have OnStar activated, $199 a year or $16.95 a month, then you can use "Personal Calling" which is the OnStar phone.
It's a pre-paid cellular service, you buy chunks of minutes with your credit card, 30 min = $10, 100 min = $30.
It's an analog 3 watt phone, not the 1/2 watt of your handheld. Free long distance and roaming, so if you travel alot the OnStar phone may get service many places your handheld won't.
OnStar issues you a phone #. You can't get service from anybody but OnStar.
If you have the Infortainment radio screen in your 9-3 with the 12 preset buttons you can dial the phone with that. If not, you're forced to use voice activated dialing where you can dial the number verbally or store nametags and such, "Call home", which you can also do instead of the 12 preset keypad, the voice activation is built into the system.
You can use your personal minutes calling to reach the OnStar Virtual Advisor which hooks you up to the OnStar computer for customized info like stock quotes or sports scores or whatever you program it to tell you.
