Is tough, but not impossible. Cars are a little like shoes in that they are made with a lot of human labor, can be very individual, and need to be tried on before delivery. Not that you can't buy shoes out of a catalog, but add in the size of the transaction and it's avoids potential troubles by dealing locally, or at least not too far away.
Buying one place and servicing another is generally not a problem. There are lots of legitimate reasons for this to happen and most service folks don't care, warranty pays the same. I suppose there could be a case where there's only one loaner car left and the person who purchased at that particular dealer might reasonably expect preference. And once in awhile there's an issue that requires the dealer to pay, undiscovered dings is one example, but that's not common at all and a careful inspection upon delivery covers that.
I've had customers buy cars while on vacation and for their kids from all over the country, cash, finance and lease. In some locals inter-state purchases are commom because of the geography.
If you order a car it can be shipped anywhere in the country and the local dealer will do a courtesy delivery so if you had a favorite Saab salesperson out of your area you could still reward him. That doesn't make buying a car long distance any easier or safer, but it can and is done.
If you're super price conscious than your best deal is always going to be on a car "in stock" where your leverage is to drive it home for the right price. After you take away the $3,500 incentive there's not near as much to be gained as most people imagine, particularly on base cars without much equipment. People would assume the $3,500 incentive comes easy and that that there's still lots of room to move. In reality the Saab incentive is the huge part of any discount and what's leftover out of the dealers slice of the pie is not very significant by comparison.
If you can't afford the MSRP less the incentive, an additonal discount from the dealer isn't gonna' make it magically affordable. The dealers margine isn't anywhere near common expectaions. And an automatic 9-3 without a sunroof or a "no option" car isn't very common.
So MSRP on an automatic Linear is $26,090 + $675 distination + $1,250 automatic = $28,015 That will be a rare car in black, polar white or laser red. Metallic colors + $500, sunroof + $1,200, heated seats (cold package)+ $500, 16" wheels and tires $500 and even the options don't have much markup.
