Incentive based selling to the rescue. This is all wraped up in your trade in allowance vs. what it's really worth vs. a payoff, if any.
I imagine to make your deal the dealer is "over allowing", that is having to tell you your trade in is worth more than he really thinks it is to make you happy or to satisfy a payoff.
Bottom line, if you're happy with the trade situation, and you're still getting $2,500 off, and your wife is happy (the most important part) then you might go for it.
Has another dealer looked at your trade? Or what do the trade in guides say? I'd use http://www.kbb.com, trade in value, and "fair" for the condition even if your car is in excellent condition. KBB.com trade in value at fair condition is what a lot of used car managers compare their value to. Actual Blue Book values, which the general public does not have access to, are fine for cars that sell for MSRP, but for incentivized new cars the KBB consumer website can be pretty realistic if you go with fair condition. Fair for the market not the condition of the car. Heaven help you if your car is actually in only fair shape in reality.
