I have a 2003 9-3SS Linear with sport suspension and the Pirelli P-Zero 225/45R17 tires. The car has about 7300 miles on it and is just one year old last week. My car has hit every pothole in the northeast over the past winter and the ride in this car has become almost unbearable. I feel the tires have a lot to do with it.

First of all, you feel every bump, every bloody pebble on the road. Worse and more dangerous, the car follows every groove, every crack, and every dip in the road surface. I find myself have to fight the car to keep it going straight and not veering off to to make a right or left on its on. We aren't talking about pulling a bit...if the road is in bad shape, its like driving Herbie the Love Bug.

I brought the car into the dealer- JMK Saab in NJ- and they said everything was fine. The suspension was not damaged by several trillion potholes, the wheels are in alignment, etc. However, I was told that these tires are designed for nice, smooth, glass-like, summertime roads. To that end, when they encounter a crack or groove in the road, they will follow it.

I started thinking about replacing the tires.

Then today I noticed I might better think more seriously about this. The front tire treads seem awfully worn. The center part and the edges in some spots seem almost smooth. The wear is pretty even, but seems to be a lot for tires that are only a year old and have only 7300 miles on them. Is this normal for these tires?

Next question: This car is leased. If I replace the tires, does anyone know if I have to replace them with the same type of tire? Beyond the cost, these tires suck for regular everyday driving in this area where the roads are in such bad shape.

Third question: Assuming I can put any tire I want on the car, would it be a bad thing to put 225/55 or 225/60 tires on the same 17" wheels? (The Pirelli P6 comes in such sizes.)

I have two more years with this car and need to do something about this. Any advice that can be offered is greatly appreciated.
