Maryland is a stud-free state, so Nokian studded are out. There are other Nokian snow tires; however, but don't see any data on how they compare other than an old 10/8/2002 Consumer Reports article that did a review...but gave Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-2 top rating in the H-category, followed by Dunlop SP WInter Sport M2's (best at ice breaking), Pirelli Winter 210 Snowsport - then the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22's, Nokian NRW ("best snow traction") and Michelin Pilot Alpin. Also on the list but further down in order: Continental ContiTouring Contact CH95, Kelly Charger HR, Cooper Lifeliner Touring SLE, Toyo Proxes TPT, Yokohama Avid H4, Goodyear Eagle LS (just so you have to be careful not to confuse this with the top billed Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip!), and finally Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring HR.

Q-category rated differently where the Kumho I'zen Stud KW-11 took top billing followed by Michelin Arctic Alpin, then Dunlop Graspic DS-1 and Gislaved Nordfrost II. Subsequent rated tires were Nokian Hakkapeliitta Q's, BF Goodrich Winter Slalom, Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice, Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50, Yokohama Guardex F720, Firestone Winterfire S-rated, and finally Cooper Weather Master XGR.

Don't know how to sort through all this data, but sounds like some more candidates! UGH. Life could be simpler! This list helps but seems focused on Nokian, Michelin, and Bridgestone (now owns about 18% of Nokian). Anyone tried Dunlop? Pirelli All-Season's come on the car, but I'm not sure whether they're the right tire - and don't buy the salesman's concept of not needing winter tires. But someone made the point that offseason was sometime back - and I guess he's right. Oh well. Thanks for the data.
