Check my old posts (and Vivek's) for info on 9-3SS stereo mods. You can also check my picture page for some ideas.
Vivek went a different direction than I did in that he bypassed the head unit and went with aftermarket amps for the component speakers. I replaced all the speakers and retained stock amps/head unit. It depends on what you want. I think my sounds great and it is a huge step over the stock 300watt system. You may think otherwise.
I recommend starting with the 300 watt system mainly because it's not awful to begin with, but it does leave all of the wiring for the upgrade. Plus, the 150 watt amp runs only the 6x9 inch speakers so just replacing those speakers with more efficient aftermarket ones is already a great improvement to the sound.
Best of Luck!
