Make sure you get a GSM phone that is classified as an "international" phone if it's an AT&T Wireless one (soon to be Cingular)...GSM is the de facto bandwidth standard in Europe, but operates on 800,850,900,1800 and 1900 Mhz. Most phones will support at least two bands, giving you coverage all over Europe. AT&T's US GSM network is unique to the US, and thus forces the need for multiband phones if you are to travel in Europe.
Look for Nokia, Siemens and Sony Ericsson phones with more than one band for your upgrade. As a telecom analyst, I travel a lot for work, and have a Siemens S46 which is AT&T Wireless's multi band world phone since supporting their older TDMA network and their new GSM network, and it works better in Europe than it does in Boston (still needs some build out in certain areas)!!! Coverage is great outside the cities, because the GSM network is still being built out, but the TDMA network has been there for a while. Granted, it's not the most exciting phone, but I care about voice connectivity only with it and use my laptop to surf the web, not my phone.
Probably more than you wanted to know...be prepared for international roaming charges when you use your phone over there. $1.50 a minute surcharge is pretty typical....
Cheers,
Paul H.
