True turbo failures do pop up, but they are pretty rare in Saabs. I've never had a turbo failure, and that's in cars each well over 150K miles, both water jacketed and non-water jacketed.

Now, lots of folks have turbo BOOST problems. On the other BBs you'll see folks saying "I'm not getting full boost - do I need a new turbo?" The answer is almost always no - the problem is in the boost control solenoid, vacuum leak, knocking, and a host of other issues. But folks figure that if there isn't much boost, the turbo must be dead. Rarely a turbocharger issue. But maybe that's where it comes from.

Of course, turbos got a very bad reputation in the mid 80's when Ford and GM stuck a turbo on anything they could find, as a way to get more performance out of smaller engines - before they could figure out emissions controls, and when gas prices were jumping. And those were almost uniformly horrible installations, on par with ham-handed shade-tree mechanics. The engines weren't engineered for the stresses of turbocharging, and they almost uniformly grenaded by 50K miles. That firmly stuck the idea that turbos equalled poor reliability in the public's mind.

The water jacketed turbo showed up in '87. The primary advantage is that it reduced oil coking in folks that just couldn't find a way to let the turbo cool down after a hard run. It is a nice thing to have.

Regular oil changes and letting the car warm up before you hammer it are the key to longevity, not just for the turbo, but for the whole engine. I expect the turbo to last the life of the car, and the life of the car to exceed 200K miles.
