Just purchased a new 9-3 arc in sweden last week via Saab's european delivery program.

Prior car was a 2001 9-5 that was totaled at the end of February (young man feel asleep while doing 50 mph and ran into the rear-end of my 9-5 parked peacefully in front of my house at 3AM in the morning). I had been planning on purchasing a new 9-5 when the 2006 models came out, but due to the accident I had to move sooner.

After the accident, my first thought was to get a 2004 9-5. I test drove several of them. While at the dealer, I also decided to evaluate the 9-3 via test drive, spec. comparison, etc. Some of the things that led to my deciding to go with a 9-3 are:
* a more sporty feel - a little tighter steering feel, maybe not as solid overall feel as the 9-5, but solid enough
* additional safety features - side curtain air bags, great braking
* refreshing dash layout / features - top of dash information display, infotainment system features - and the ability to modify many settings on your own w/o having to have the dealer work the Tech II

My wife and I put 800 + miles on the new 9-3 in Sweden/Denmark before dropping the car off on Monday morning in Gothenburgh for shipment to the U.S. It drove great (we hated to part with it !) lots of power, intuitive controls, etc.

The only downsides I could see vs. 9-5 is loss of some backseat leg room, less trunk space, and a little more solid feel.

You can't go wrong with either car, really a matter of personal preference.
