It could be that the six speed comes from a different supplier and that it is too costly to produce (Remember, Saab is owned by GM). It could also be that Saab has made a better gear ratio change to the transmission and therefore they don't need the 6th gear. The only reason I can think that Saab needed the sixth gear was for added fuel economy.
