As GM becomes more active in the day-to-day operations of Saab, the opportunity for confusion and misunderstandings regarding incentives continues to grow. Although Saab is owned by GM, it is not always included in divisional GM programs, or the rules of eligibility may vary. This can make it a challenge for the buyer as well as the seller to navigate through the incentive programs.
Currently the incentive FROM SAAB on the 9-3 Linear is $3000 for a purchase, $3500 for a lease. In addition, a CURRENT SAAB OWNER OR LESSEE is eligible for a $500 Loyalty Bonus.
Now along comes GM with the "Rev Up Your Ride" Owner Loyalty Certificate Program. This is not a Saab program, but it applies to Saab. If you are a CURRENT OWNER OR LESSEE of a GM product, including Saab, you can get a $4000 incentive on the purchase or lease of a 2004 Saab 9-3 sedan. This EXCLUDES most other incentive programs, including Loyalty, Supplier and Employee programs.
"Annoyed buyer" doesn't say if he (or she) is a Saab or GM owner, nor does he say if he asked the dealer about the $4000 incentive. A quick read of the Incentive program could easily lead a dealer to mistakenly believe that the $4000 GM program applies to the purchase of a new Saab by owners of GM division vehicles. As I said, many times Saab (and sometimes Saturn and Hummer) are subject to different rules.
Finally, It is unlikely that the dealer was knowingly trying to hide the $500 difference from "Annoyed buyer". They are funded from two different sources, and in order to claim the GM $4000, the dealer needs to provide a signed acknowlegdgement from the buyer, along with the Loyalty Certificate or proof of ownership.
Sorry to be long-winded, but not every misunderstanding is malicious. If you come to my dealership, I'll be happy to review the 25-page incentive bulletin for June with you. I bet your dealer will too, if you're civil about it.
