The 9-3 SS has fiber optic cable in it. It is used for one of the three data busses in the car, in this case the "O" bus. The data speed on the O-bus is 25Mbits/s.
It connects the Infotainment Control Module(ICM)known as the radio controls on the dash, CD changers front and rear (CDF, CDCF and CDCR), Entertainment Head Unit (EHU)known as the radio tuner/amp, Amplifier 1 and 2 (AMP1, AMP2), and the Communications Unit/Positoning Unit (CU/PU) known as the ONSTAR unit.
The O-bus communicates with other busses via the ICM. It acts as a gateway to the "P" and "I" busses. For example, the ICM receives vehicle speed info from the TCS/ESP unit on the P-bus. It then makes that info available to 0-bus modules like EHU, AMPS 1 and 2, so that they can raise the volume relative to speed. (Yeah I know, you can hardly tell the difference, but that is how it is suppose to work)
So the fiber optics are in use right now. The only intended "future" use is a junction point for the addition of the AMPS 2 and CDCR in the LR of the trunk. The 13 speaker sound system already has AMPS 2 installed and I have never seen a CDCR installed.
Fiber optic cable is colored orange and can not be cut to fit without very expensive, specialized tools. It should also never be bent in a radius less than 1" as this action will cause internal damage that can cause intermitant communication breakdown. This damage will not be readily apparent. If the cable is damaged, the whole section will have to be replaced.
Hope this helps,
Steve Crowe, Saab Master Tech, Who only speaks for himself.
