Background:
My daughter was lucky to not be hurt, as she had her old set of wheels crunched beyond repair. We made her a deal that she would buy her old college car back from us (a old but true 740GL), and then buy whatever new car we bought to replace it from us in 3 years (at fair market value), after she finishes law school. This way she would be in a safe car, and we could ensure that her replacement car was both in great shape and would also be a safe car.

While I considered other cars (Passat, Audi A4, BMW 323), as a GM Supplier - the discount price made this a no brainer, a $30K car for about $24K!

What we bought:
2004 9-3SS Linear, 16" wheels, auto, elect driver seat, premium package, steel grey, mud flaps, truck mat, trunk side box; black pearl plate holders; Saab tire caps.
Note: Another plug for Mike Lynch. Yes this was a simple deal, GM Supplier priced and all - but Mike is a car - and SAAB GUY! This was about a month before Mike moved to Continental in Oceanside. Great advise and a very fair person to deal with - give him a shot on your next Saab!
Likes:
Good ride - and feel of the road; good brakes; great around town engine response; good MPG; looks, especially with the 16" wheels; seems very solid; no problems from the first day we picked up the car. SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY!
Dislikes:
-Sound system (base 6 pack CD) unit, is weak - but I don't think that I am as unhappy with it as I would have been with the premium sounds added cost, and minimal sound improvement.
-I'm 6'2", and with the seat all the way back, the door pillar gets in the way as I get in and out of the car. (Will not be a problem for my daughter).
-I would have liked better tires the the P6's that come with the 16" wheels.

Good luck with all of your cars - for now, I'm a happy 9-5SE and 9-3SS owner!!
