Susan, I have 00 9-3 base and I use it to go snowboarding all the time. Sure I got stuck at the resort's parking lot before, but that just means that was a good day at the hill! Lots of powder:) I go to hills around Seattle, so there are alot of risk in wet/icy/snowy roads when you are trying to go snowboarding, but all I do is carry chains. Never used it and I don't have snow tires. I guess it does just as well as any other FWD, but the option of starting in 3rd gear may have save me few times.. not sure because I always start out using "W" (stands for Winter mode) option when in doubt.
It also comes with the place where I can slide my skis in thru the back, but since yours is SS, I'm not sure if back seats/ski sliding area holds down. (don't worry if you don't have that. I never use it.)
If you can hold off buying, I think Audi A3s are pretty cool with hatchback and all wheel drive. Sorry GM/Saab... should never discotinued the hatchback!
