I am in Australia, so I can't recommend a brand that you would have, but I have used a foam (in a spray can) "Car Upholstery Cleaner".... of which there are several brands. They usually have a plastic "brush" on the end of the lid of the can (just fine plastic knobs, I guess you would say) for massaging the foam in after spraying. A bit like spray can carpet cleaner for you house.
It does say "do not use on roof headliners" on the can, but I have used it on a classic 900 and my current 9-3 without any problems. Just as long as you don't use too much. I do live in a warm part of Australia, so we have very little headliner sagging problems anyway.
It does work quite well, just spray a little, massage it gently with the plastic brush, and wipe with a very clean white towel imediately to remove any moisture. These products are essentially dry-cleaning fluid, so it dries quickly and without wet marks.
It even seems to remove ciggarette burn marks (the grey colour anyway), although not the actual burn! :-)
Hope this helps.
