Crankcase vent mod and blue smoke

One of my buddies recently had the crankcase vent modification performed on his '01 9-3 (about 50k miles) to remedy "oil leakage" as per the TSB. Interestingly, the infamous cloud of "blue smoke" that he had been experiencing seems to have subsided.
Any chance that this procedure is the correct fix for the blue smoke problem? What would the logic be?
