The Viggen was hamstrung by the old Opel-Vectra-derived chassis of the NG900/9-3. I think that it is universally agreed that the new 9-3SS is a very significant improvement in roadholding and ability to cope with front wheel drive. Taking similar amounts of power, I have a feeling that the new 9-3SS would better be able to handle the increase.
Additionally, it is not just the maximum Torque and HP figures that determine the ability of a particular chassis to handle the power. Rather, it is the way in which the power is developed and delivered by the engine. The Viggen had a rather aggressive power delivery curve. A V6 is likely to have a much more gradual and progressive power delivery. I would expect a particular chassis to be better able to handle the power from a V6 than from a highly tuned 4 cylinder.
