ACC display fix attempt

My 1999 9-3SE's climate control display has been bugging me for about a year...many of the segments are missing, so I thought I'd open it up and give it a shot.
The unit comes apart very easily, but the display is connected to its control board by only a ribbon cable, and has NO stress relief whatsoever. It is an adhesive type ribbon that is stuck to the edge of the LCD glass and to the board. It looks like heat from the nearby lamp (backlight to the LCD) had caused the ribbon to curl up and disconnect.
I tried a number of techniques to re-"stick" the flimsy ribbon but no real luck. I put it back together and it is about as good as it was before disassembly.
Is there a source for 22 conductor ribbon cable that could be a replacement? There are points that a wire ribbon cable or connector could have been soldered to the board, but that would leave the LCD end wanting.
The unit works fine...sucks that it would cost so much to replace it for such a minor ill-designed problem. Ideas? Has this unit been around since the OG900 SE?
