Last winter when the problem first appeared i had my local indy mechanic swap out my rack with another 9-3 rack (from a parts car in his junkyard). There was no difference in feel, so i had him put the original back -- but honestly i have no idea if the swapped rack was any good either...
Bayridge SAAB in Brooklyn said i need a new rack b/c tie rod ends are loose, but 3 (yes, 3) second opinions from SAAB indys say NO (at $1300 for a new rack I want to be sure) -- but nor can they pinpoint what's causing the looseness. One of the three indys has even admitted that he's encountered two other 9-3s in the past with the same problem.
