Thats the way that they often fail. Some variation as you have seen. If this happens and one leaves the ignition on and lifts the hood, you can watch the continued destruction. The DI harness can melt if you like too. The danger is that the tow truck dude leave the ignition on and does this for you.
Lesson: promply turn off the ignition and remove the DI connector to prevent the tow operator fry. Do not try to start the engine when smoke has been seen or the smell of burn epoxy is noticed near the DI.
Some DI plugs are quite difficult to get off anyways, so might just be that.
What happened probably has absolute zero to do with the plugs. Heat, vibration and time kill the DIs and the expected lifetime of the black DIs has been seen to be "extremely variable". "Extreme variations" of operating life is one way of defining "unreliable".
