Took my daughter's NG900 into the dealer for the 60K service yesterday. Same dealer that has serviced my wife's 9-5 all along and we've had pretty good luck with them.

They said the head gasket is leaking (oil, not coolant), both front and rear, and the the water pump is also leaking and the rear rotors need to be replaced as they're pitted. Honestly, I was not at all prepared for them to call me with a nearly $3K estimate, including the 60K service. I was counting on $600-ish and no more.

Called a reputable Saab indy. He suggested that I bring the car and they'll take a look, no charge, and give me an idea of what they think is required. The indy said that the head gasket leaks on Saabs are common, so it may not really be an issue on this car - he needs to see it first.

So, what's the story here? Why are head gasket leaks common on Saabs. I've had many other cars that have never had head gasket leaks. I notice on my 9000, who's head gasket was dealer replaced 15K miles ago is seeping on both ends, too.

Any suggestions on the water pump? Is there an OEM replacement that may hold up better than the factory part? Is Barrs Leaks a wise additive, or is it snake oil? (A few years ago, I will say it plugged the heck out of the tubes in my '35 Packard's radiator, but the construction of it is much different than the Saab's.)

How about the rotors and pads? Should I go with factory parts or if aftermarket what works? We had the rotors and pads replaced on my wife's 9-5 wagon with non Saab parts. The pads caused problems, I don't recall what, though. The dealer wound up replacing with factory pads and cleared up the issue.

Thanks,
=Adam=
