I have a 2001 9-3 convertible. I was losing about an eighth of an inch of coolant every 100 miles lookiing at the overflow tank. It was discovered that I was losing coolant from the head gasket. The mechanic could see dried coolant on the side of the block below the head gasket.
I read on this forum I believe that the newer Saabs are know to have head gasket problems. Part of the problem is that Saab changed head bolts to what the mechanic called "stretch bolts". On the old engines the head bolts were torqued to 300 ft. lbs. he said and that was it. The new bolts I guess sometimes require retorquing, especially if they are not torqued perfectly at the factory. Sometimes, the mechanics are able to retorque the head bolts and see if that stops the leaking. In my case they replaced the head gasket. Luckily I was under extended warranty otherwise this would have cost me 2 thousand dollars. My car has 36 thousand miles.
